Alex joined the DS Virgin Racing Formula E team as reserve and development driver on a multi-year deal in January 2017. After an impressive debut race weekend in New York, it was announced in September 2017 that he will be a full-season race driver for 2017/2018.
Since the beginning of the inaugural season in September 2014, the series has grown rapidly in popularity, while an ever-increasing number of manufacturers are committing to the championship and producing electric powertrains.
All teams run the same chassis developed by Spark Racing Technology in association with Dallara, and batteries supplied by Williams Advanced Engineering. Manufacturers are able to build the electric motor, inverter, gearbox and cooling system. At present, each driver is required to swap to a second car in the middle of the race, but it is expected that development in battery technology will allow cars to complete a full race distance by the 2018/19 season.
Alex's team was established prior to the first season by the Virgin Group and its pioneering founder Richard Branson. It partnered with DS Automobiles, part of the PSA Group, ahead of season two. In his role, Alex conducts simulator and development work for the team throughout the season as well as racing at all rounds of the FIA Formula E Championship.
