Arai Helmet Ltd was founded in Tokyo, Japan by Hirotake Arai in 1905, but it wasn’t until 1952 that this family-run firm began supplying headgear to professional off-road motorcycle racers. The first world champion to use an Arai helmet was Freddie Spencer, winner of the 1983 World GP 500cc, and in the 1986/87 Formula One seasons, 26 of the 28 drivers wore Arai helmets. In 2005 carbon-fibre helmets became mandatory in F1, and Arai introduced the first one at that year’s French GP. Today, Arai remains a leader in innovative helmet technology for track and road, with every helmet still almost 100 per cent handmade.
